Compare the Canadian products first
A review of Webull in the United States cannot settle whether Webull Canada fits a Canadian TFSA or RRSP. The entities, account catalogue, cash-movement rules and offers differ. Start with the local website and the account registration shown in your Canadian application, then check the investments and currency functions available within that registration.
Webull Canada’s account-opening catalogue lists cash, margin, TFSA and RRSP accounts. Do not infer that an FHSA, RESP or US retirement account is available because another broker or another Webull country offers it. Wealthsimple’s USD upgrade page lists several eligible Canadian registrations, but managed accounts are a separate case. Match the registration you need before spending time comparing chart colours or signup rewards.
The fee comparison behind $0 commission
These figures were checked on using Wealthsimple’s fee schedule, its USD trading rules, Webull Canada pricing and Webull’s detailed fee breakdown. Temporary waivers and other applicable charges should be checked again before opening or moving an account.
| Item | Wealthsimple | Webull Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible online Canadian/US stock and ETF commissions | $0 | $0 |
| USD balance and trading setup | Core USD trading upgrade $10 CAD plus tax/month after trial; included opt-in at Premium/Generation | CAD and USD sides included; no separate currency-side opening charge |
| Ordinary small CAD/USD conversion | 1.5% for conversions below $10,000; the specified USD-account cash route has larger-transaction tiers | Published FX rate plus 1.5% markup |
| Recurring account charge to include | USD upgrade subscription where applicable | Detailed fee schedule lists $0.70 per month per account administration/maintenance |
| Outgoing institution transfer | Published outgoing transfer charge $0 | Partial: $50 plus tax; full: $150 plus tax |
A free USD side and an account maintenance fee can coexist. Likewise, zero commission does not erase an exchange/regulatory fee or the spread between a security’s buy and sell prices. The detailed schedule gives a more useful cost inventory than a headline alone.
Holding USD is not the same as buying USD
Webull’s CAD and USD account explanation says both currency sides are created with an account. That can let cash remain in its own currency rather than forcing a conversion simply to display it. Funding the USD side using Canadian dollars is still a currency transaction. Read the amount of USD you receive in the confirmation instead of interpreting “USD account included” as an exchange-rate promise.
At Wealthsimple, enabling USD trading is also about retaining and reusing USD for US securities. Paying the Core subscription does not buy unlimited free CAD/USD conversion. If you already qualify for an included upgrade, check that you opted in; if not, include the paid months in your annual estimate. A USD chequing account should not be substituted for the brokerage upgrade when comparing trading costs.
Two fictional investors, two different cost questions
A monthly CAD contributor
Morgan has one account and converts $800 CAD every month. At a hypothetical 1.5% fee component, $800 × 12 × 0.015 is $144 per year, before the exchange-rate spread and any other charges. If a relevant plan adds $10 for each of twelve paid months, another $120 enters the budget. If an account schedule adds $0.70 for each month, that line is $8.40 for one account, before any applicable tax or waiver. These are separate cost lines, not a claim that each broker’s full FX execution is identical.
An investor who already has USD
Riley starts with USD and intends to sell one US-listed security and buy another. The questions become whether the incoming USD route is supported, whether sale proceeds remain USD and whether enough settled USD is available for the second purchase. A conversion charge on new CAD funding is not automatically relevant to every later USD-to-USD trade.
Do not turn the difference between Morgan and Riley into a universal winner. They have different funding currencies and different demands on the account. The cost tools let you separate recurring fees from percentage estimates, while the currency conversion guide explains why the confirmed quote is more precise than amount multiplied by headline percentage.
Check the actual USD cash before placing a US order
Webull Canada’s fee breakdown warns that the client manages the CAD and USD balances and that it will not automatically convert cash to flatten a deficit created by a purchase. It also lists borrowing or negative-balance interest separately. A positive total account value therefore should not be treated as proof that no currency debit exists.
Before submitting an order, check the settlement currency, available cash and order preview. After a sale, check the actual currency balance and any settlement restriction. Looking only at a CAD-equivalent portfolio total can hide the very balance that matters for the next USD purchase. If the screen is unclear, ask official support how the order will settle before relying on a forum workaround.
Test the workflow that matters to you
A useful platform check is a short list of tasks: find the exact ticker and exchange, understand the order preview, locate CAD and USD balances, find a statement and reach support. Add the specific order type or recurring purchase feature you actually intend to use. Availability can depend on account type, security and platform, so a broad product label is not enough.
This comparison does not award unsupported scores for reliability, execution quality or customer service. Public screenshots and marketing claims are not a measured account test. Nor should a global Webull feature list be treated as a Canadian promise. Where a feature determines your choice, confirm it in the Canadian product documentation or through official support.
Plan the transfer and the possible exit
Make a list of each account registration, security, currency and fractional holding before requesting an in-kind transfer. Check destination acceptance for every item. Ask how uninvested USD will arrive and whether a full or partial transfer changes that answer. A supported Canadian stock purchase does not establish that all foreign listings, restricted securities or existing positions can move.
Keep outgoing fees and any conditional reimbursement separate from a referral or transfer promotion. A promise that another broker may reimburse a charge is not the same as the charge never occurring. Keep the statement showing the fee and check the reimbursement deadline and eligible amount directly with the receiving broker. For a TFSA, follow the CRA direct-transfer route rather than assuming a withdrawal and immediate redeposit is equivalent.
If you choose Wealthsimple after comparing the account, this site’s referral application guide explains code PGVORW. We may receive a referral reward. The referral has separate eligibility requirements and should not replace the fee and account checks above.
What to do next
The relevant Wealthsimple versus Webull Canada comparison is the account you can open, the currency you will fund and reuse, and every recurring or exit cost. An included USD side can be useful without making FX free. A simple cost worksheet and a verified transfer plan give a clearer answer than a blanket “best app” label.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Can I use US Webull fees to compare Canadian accounts?
No. Use Webull Canada’s pricing and Canadian account documentation. US account registrations, funding systems, promotions and other features should not be carried into a Canadian comparison.
Does Webull Canada charge nothing to hold USD?
Its help says CAD and USD sides are built into the account without a separate opening charge. Its detailed fee schedule separately lists $0.70 per month per account administration/maintenance, and converting currencies has its own markup. Confirm any applicable waiver with Webull.
Does Wealthsimple charge FX every time I sell a US stock?
The outcome depends on whether USD trading is enabled and on the currency route. Enabled USD trading lets you use and retain USD; a US trade from a CAD account can involve conversion. Check the account and order confirmation rather than assuming every account behaves alike.
Can I move my existing FHSA to Webull Canada?
The Canadian account catalogue checked for this comparison lists cash, margin, TFSA and RRSP accounts. It does not establish FHSA support. Confirm current support before starting any transfer; do not use a US Webull account list as evidence.
Is a positive total balance enough for a USD purchase?
Not necessarily. The combined portfolio value and actual settled USD cash are different figures. Webull’s schedule says clients manage currency balances and warns that a purchase deficit is not automatically flattened with a conversion. Review the currency cash balance and any interest exposure first.
