Start with the account and currency you actually need

This comparison covers Canadian self-directed brokerage accounts. Wealthsimple managed portfolios and Questwealth Portfolios are separate products with separate pricing. A managed-account service fee should not be inserted into a comparison of placing your own stock trades.

Write down three things before comparing an app: the account registration, the securities you already hold and the currency of your next deposit. An RRSP transfer containing US-dollar cash raises different questions from a new TFSA funded monthly in Canadian dollars. The account name alone does not tell you whether a particular holding or transfer route is supported.

Current fees that change the calculation

Pricing below was checked against the Wealthsimple Trade fee schedule, USD account help and Questrade transaction schedule on . Quotes in the broker’s account screen control the actual transaction.

Wealthsimple and Questrade: published Canadian brokerage costs
Cost or featureWealthsimpleQuestrade
Online Canadian/US listed stock and ETF commissions$0$0
Holding and reusing USDUSD trading upgrade; Core $10 CAD plus tax per month after trial; included with opt-in for Premium/GenerationCAD and USD balances available; check the specific account and settlement preference
Ordinary CAD/USD conversionCAD-account US trades: 1.5%; USD-account cash conversion tiers depend on transaction sizePublished direct conversion fee: 1.5%
Journaling an eligible security$9.95 CAD plus tax per requestNormally $9.95 per request; Questrade Plus waiver has separate subscription conditions
Full or partial account transfer out$0 listed outgoing transfer charge$150 listed for either full or partial transfer; applicable taxes may apply

Journaling and exit charges come from Questrade’s administration schedule and the respective broker documentation. Zero commission does not remove a security’s bid-ask spread, FX costs, fund expenses or every applicable exchange/regulatory charge.

The important USD distinction: convert once, then reuse

If a Canadian-dollar account automatically converts a US-stock purchase and later converts the sale proceeds back, changing investments can create another currency crossing. Holding the proceeds in USD lets a later US purchase use the same currency. Count those crossings rather than counting only the number of trades.

For Wealthsimple, the USD trading upgrade is a separate decision from opening a USD chequing account. Premium and Generation inclusion still requires opting in. For Questrade registered accounts, the currency settlement setting can retain the transaction currency or convert balances to a selected currency. A negative currency balance can also trigger conversion. A combined CAD-equivalent account value is not proof that the account holds enough USD cash.

A fictional $500-a-month example

Consider Alex, who adds $500 CAD each month and intends to convert each deposit once. At an assumed 1.5% fee component, the rough annual conversion-cost budget is $500 × 12 × 0.015 = $90 CAD. This is planning arithmetic, not a live exchange quote; the reference rate, calculation method and rounding still matter.

If Alex also pays for Wealthsimple’s Core USD trading upgrade for twelve paid months, its listed subscription adds $120 before tax. That produces a simplified $210 combined subscription/FX budget, excluding spreads and other charges. An included USD upgrade removes the subscription line, not the conversion line. Questrade’s direct-conversion route has no Wealthsimple subscription, but Alex must separately check any selected Questrade plan and other services.

Now change one assumption: Alex already receives USD from an eligible external account. The new money does not need a CAD-to-USD conversion merely because the broker is Canadian. Review the actual supported funding route and currency instead of adding the same $90 automatically. Use the brokerage cost tools to change the inputs; do not treat this fictional person as a recommendation for your account.

Larger conversions and journaling need a second calculation

Wealthsimple’s USD-account cash conversion fee is tiered by each transaction: 1.5% below $10,000, 1% from $10,000 to $24,999.99, 0.5% from $25,000 to $99,999.99 and 0% from $100,000. Its corporate exchange rate can still include a spread. Several small conversions are not pooled into the larger transaction tier. These tiers concern the specified USD-account conversion route, not every US-stock purchase paid for directly with CAD.

Both brokers now document journaling: Wealthsimple’s workflow and Questrade’s workflow have their own requirements. That makes older comparisons claiming Wealthsimple cannot perform Norbert’s Gambit incomplete. It does not make journaling instant or free. Read the broker’s supported security, settlement timing, request fee and restrictions before placing either trade. A flat request fee can exceed a percentage fee on a small amount; the lower visible fee also does not guarantee a better final result after spreads or market movement. The CAD/USD cost guide separates those components.

Transfer the account without accidentally changing the currency plan

Wealthsimple’s USD transfer instructions distinguish incoming cash from USD-enabled trading. USD cash arriving through a full transfer into a trading account can remain USD without a paid USD upgrade. Using that cash to trade without opting in or subscribing can still involve conversion fees. Partial transfers made in cash move in CAD; do not assume a partial USD cash move follows the full-transfer rule.

For either destination, make an inventory of whole shares, fractional holdings, unsupported assets, cash and open orders. Ask whether each item can arrive in kind. An investment being available to buy does not establish that every form of its existing holding can transfer. Keep enough cash for any outgoing institution’s charge and obtain written answers through official support if a holding is unclear.

For a TFSA move, the CRA’s direct-transfer guidance explains why asking the receiving institution to transfer is different from withdrawing and redepositing yourself. Contribution-room consequences can matter more than a small trading-fee difference.

Compare the tasks, then compare any referral

Build a one-year checklist: deposits by currency, conversion amounts, likely sales and reinvestments, paid account features, market-data needs and one possible exit. Try the public platform demonstrations or paper features where offered, and check whether the order types you need work in your account. This comparison does not assign execution-speed or support-quality scores from an unperformed test.

When costs are close, a platform that helps you avoid an unintended currency conversion may be more useful than another feature you never use. A different investor may place greater value on an account registration or supported investment. Neither preference proves a universal winner.

If you independently choose Wealthsimple, this site shares code PGVORW; the application guide explains the signup checks. Questrade code 306030314488569 is also owner-provided; confirm whether Questrade accepts it and what its current offer requires. We may receive a referral reward. Neither code changes the published fee comparison or guarantees a reward.

What to do next

Compare the currency route and account functions before choosing between Wealthsimple and Questrade. For a CAD-funded Canadian-listed ETF routine, ordinary commissions may tell you little. For repeated US trades, USD settlement and conversion frequency can drive the result. Put ongoing costs and transfer restrictions beside any temporary incentive.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Is Questrade still more expensive for every stock trade?

Its current published schedule lists $0 online commissions for eligible Canadian- and US-listed stocks and ETFs. Older commission comparisons can be stale. FX, special routing, administration and other applicable costs remain separate.

Does a Wealthsimple Premium account remove all currency conversion costs?

No. Eligible Premium clients can opt in to included USD trading accounts, which helps retain and reuse USD. Converting CAD and USD can still have a fee, and the corporate exchange rate may include a spread.

Can I transfer USD cash to Wealthsimple without paying for USD trading?

The dedicated transfer help says USD cash arriving in a trading account is deposited as USD. That does not give the same trading treatment as an enabled USD account. Partial transfers made in cash move in CAD; confirm your chosen route before submitting.

Is Norbert’s Gambit free at both brokers?

No. Wealthsimple documents a $9.95 CAD plus tax journaling fee. Questrade normally charges $9.95 per request, with a separate Questrade Plus waiver. Settlement, spreads and price movement can affect the final cost.

Should I withdraw my TFSA to move brokers faster?

A personal withdrawal and redeposit is different from a direct institution-to-institution transfer and can create a new contribution. Ask the receiving institution for the transfer route and check your own contribution room with the CRA guidance before moving money.
