Funding and payout: two separate checks
A TFSA or RRSP is a registered account type; trading and managed investing describe how investments are held and managed. Wealthsimple’s account comparison distinguishes those choices. Seeing “TFSA” on an account does not answer every referral question. Check the account and promotion details instead of treating all account labels as interchangeable.
Wealthsimple lists Trade, Crypto, Managed Investing and Chequing as eligible funding account types. It excludes internal transfers, peer-to-peer transfers, Wealthsimple bonuses, promotional credits and group transactions from qualifying funding. See the official funding list.
The current standard terms require at least $100 CAD in qualifying external net funding within the applicable window. Separately, the reward requires a good-standing Chequing account where the recipient is the primary owner. Read the qualifying-funding and payout conditions.
Our practical interpretation: check funding and payout separately before sending more money. A Chequing-opening prompt alone does not explain whether an earlier deposit qualified. It also does not prove that another $100 deposit is required. Account-specific confirmation comes from Wealthsimple.
Two illustrative situations
Example 1: funding done, payout destination missing
Alex uses a referral link, funds an eligible investing account from an outside institution, and later sees a request to open Chequing. The next useful checks are the recorded referral, completed funding and payout-account status. Repeating signup would not resolve those questions. This example illustrates a checklist, not a promise that Alex qualifies.
Example 2: Chequing open, funding still unconfirmed
Sam opens Chequing but moves money there from another Wealthsimple account. The screen may show a balance, while that internal movement does not establish qualifying external funding. Sam should review the source and timing of the original funding rather than equating an open account with an earned reward.
These are invented teaching examples, not customer experiences. For more funding scenarios, read the Canadian eligibility and funding guide.
What to do in your account
- Check the relationship. Open the gift icon, then Invite friends and Referral history. Look for the linked referrer before trying another code. Official confirmation steps.
- Review your own records. Note the referral date, the external source, when funds arrived and any payout notification. A submitted transfer request is different from proof that funding completed.
- Check the Chequing requirement. If you decide to open it, the app’s Home tab leads to Accounts → add (+) → Open a new account → Chequing. Follow the ownership and verification prompts. Card choices include a physical card, a virtual card or no card. Official account-opening instructions.
- Ask the right support team. If records conflict, contact Wealthsimple through its app or official website. This publisher cannot inspect accounts, link referrals or release a reward.

Payout timing and two 90-day clocks
The standard $25 base reward is payable within 24 hours after qualifying referral funding completes and processes, provided the other requirements are met. That is different from 24 hours after clicking a link.
The terms describe 90 days from the first Chequing-opening notification to open the account, but also say an unapplied bonus expires 90 days after issuance. Those clauses use different starting events. Follow the dates in your notification and ask support promptly if they differ; do not assume another 90 days starts when you notice the message. Check the Application of Bonus section.
The standard terms also require the bonus to remain within Wealthsimple for 180 days; this concerns the reward rather than a blanket freeze on all original funding. See the withdrawal and bonus-hold explanation before treating a payout as clearance to move money.
What about older TFSA or RRSP bonuses?
Wealthsimple’s help page describes automatic Chequing payouts since July 3, 2025. For historical bonuses paid into registered accounts, it says it cannot reverse the payment to change that destination. Such bonuses may be reported as contributions. Older screenshots are therefore poor evidence of where a new reward will go. Read Wealthsimple’s registered-account explanation.
If a TFSA withdrawal or new contribution is involved, check your own records first. CRA says a withdrawal restores contribution room on January 1 of the following year; same-year recontribution requires sufficient existing room. CRA explains TFSA withdrawals. A referral article cannot determine your personal room or tax treatment.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Why can’t the bonus simply go into my TFSA?
Chequing is the current published destination. The sources do not establish why Wealthsimple chose that rule; we do not present speculation about tax or product design as its explanation.
Do both people need Chequing?
Yes. Wealthsimple’s confirmation guidance requires both the referrer and referee to have Chequing for their respective payouts.
Do I need a physical card?
The opening instructions offer a no-card option. Opening the account and ordering a card are separate choices.
Will opening Chequing make an old account a new referral?
No automatic reset should be assumed. Referral eligibility depends on your existing registration, funding history and applicable offer. Ask official support about your account.
What if I’ve opened Chequing and the bonus is still missing?
Work through the missing-bonus checklist: linked referral, qualifying funding, processing, ownership and notifications. Keep sensitive records within official support channels.
What to do next
Review the qualifying external funding and the Chequing payout requirement separately. If a prompt or deadline is unclear, ask official support what remains incomplete in your account. Do not create another profile or repeat funding merely because the reward has not appeared.
