1. Open the right receiving account first

You are moving an existing account record and its eligible assets. It is different from sending money to a bank and making a fresh deposit. List each source account separately: a TFSA, individual non-registered account and spousal RRSP are three distinct instructions, even when they appear under one Wealthsimple login.

At Questrade, confirm the receiving account is approved and appropriate for the source registration and ownership. Check every account holder on a joint registration. A spouse appearing on a household dashboard is not automatically the legal holder of the transferred account. Locked-in plans, estate situations and changes of ownership need account-specific confirmation rather than a standard individual-account shortcut.

Use Wealthsimple’s official transfer-out instructions for the relinquishing institution details. Wealthsimple directs the receiving institution to initiate the request. Copy your account number from the actual account document, not a Chequing number or a number recalled from another plan.

2. Choose the instruction that matches your goal

Separate how much moves from whether investments are sold
DecisionWhat to specifyCheck before signing
Full in kindMove eligible securities and cash. Can the destination hold each position and its currency?
Full as cashMove proceeds after the required sales.Who sells, when, and what settlement is needed?
PartialName exact share quantities and cash currencies. What remains, including small cash balances and obligations?

A partial transfer is a size instruction, not a promise that no assets will be sold. Avoid vague instructions such as “move half my account.” Write the symbol, exchange or currency where relevant, whole-share quantity and any cash amount. Read our in-kind versus cash guide if those choices are unfamiliar.

Wealthsimple’s current rules distinguish self-directed whole shares, fractional shares and managed holdings. Full in-kind transfers cannot move fractional portions as securities; those portions are sold. Managed holdings are liquidated for transfer. A self-directed cash transfer requires you to sell your holdings first. Check the source instructions for your account rather than assuming the receiving form sells everything automatically.

3. Prepare a transfer folder with more than a balance screenshot

  1. Save a recent statement. Include the name, account type, number and holdings pages.
  2. Export transaction history. Keep purchase, sale, reinvested-distribution and currency records, particularly for non-registered holdings.
  3. List pending events. Note unsettled trades, open orders, incoming deposits and expected distributions. Ask how any lending, collateral or margin obligations must be resolved.
  4. Record the instruction. Keep the signed full/partial request and its reference number.
  5. Save relevant offer terms. Include any retention requirement at Wealthsimple and any separate destination promotion registration.

Keep sensitive statements in a secure personal folder and upload them only through the broker’s authenticated process. The publisher does not need your account number, SIN, login or complete statement to explain these steps.

Do a separate USD check

Write down Canadian cash, US cash and US-listed securities in separate rows. A screen displaying your total in CAD does not prove that your USD was converted. Ask which actual currency will move, which side receives it, and whether later trading or conversion has a separate cost. Do not sell a US holding solely because a combined account total looks Canadian.

4. Submit and monitor the receiving request

Questrade’s brokerage transfer-in page describes the current route through Move money → Transfer → Transfer an account to Questrade. Select the destination, identify the source institution, enter the source account number, choose the instruction, review and sign. Use the official guide if interface labels differ.

After submitting, follow the transfer-history record and respond to document requests in the secure portal. Avoid creating a second overlapping request because the first looks unchanged. Ask whether the original instruction has been accepted, rejected or is waiting for a specific correction.

Trading and withdrawal access can be restricted during processing. An asset disappearing from the sending screen before appearing at the receiver is a reason to check the transfer stage, not an instruction to buy it again. Keep money you need imminently outside the transfer plan, and ask the institutions about access before submitting.

5. Separate an actual charge from a promotional headline

Wealthsimple currently states that it does not charge an institutional transfer-out fee. That does not erase separate investment costs, a tax consequence from selling, or conditions on a previous incentive. A fee reimbursement repays a qualifying expense; it is not extra cashback simply because another broker advertises a reimbursement allowance.

For a new Questrade application, the owner shares referral code 306030314488569. We may receive a referral reward. A referral code does not select the transfer method or establish eligibility for a transfer promotion. Check the offer actually presented to you; do not assume a referral replaces another promotion’s registration or can always be combined with it.

Hypothetical example: one ETF and a fractional remainder

Suppose an investor wants to move 40.4 ETF shares and USD cash from a self-directed TFSA. Their review has three separate lines: the eligible whole shares, the 0.4 fractional portion and the USD cash. They request direct account transfer treatment, confirm handling with both brokers and later compare the received assets with the final statement. This example supplies no expected sale price, completion date or tax outcome.

6. Reconcile before calling the move finished

Compare units first, then cash by currency, then total displayed value. Prices move while a transfer is underway, so a different total is not enough to diagnose a missing asset. Keep a short exception list for any absent position, unsupported asset, sale proceeds or fee.

A dividend entitled before the move can arrive at the old broker later. Ask for the residual-transfer process using the original request reference. Keep access to old statements and tax documents after a full transfer; a closed investment account is not a reason to discard its records. If cost figures differ, preserve your independent acquisition records and ask Questrade to investigate before relying on the displayed performance figure.

What to do next

A careful move starts with the destination account and ends with a line-by-line reconciliation. Use the transfer delay and fee checklist to track open items, and keep referral offers separate from the account-transfer instruction.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Do I start a Wealthsimple-to-Questrade transfer at Wealthsimple?

Start with Questrade as the receiving broker. Wealthsimple’s transfer-out help requires the receiving institution to submit the request.

Can I move my TFSA without withdrawing it to my bank?

Request a direct TFSA-to-TFSA institutional transfer. Withdrawing personally and contributing elsewhere is a different transaction and can create a contribution-room problem.

Will all my Wealthsimple investments move without being sold?

That depends on the source product, transfer instruction and destination support. Whole self-directed shares can move in kind; fractional portions and managed holdings have different handling.

Can I claim a $150 reimbursement if Wealthsimple charged no transfer-out fee?

A reimbursement concerns a qualifying fee actually charged. Do not assume an advertised maximum is a cash bonus payable when there is no corresponding expense.

What if a dividend appears at Wealthsimple after the main transfer?

Keep the old statement and ask the receiving broker about a residual transfer under the existing request. Provide the payment date and currency through secure support; avoid a duplicate full transfer.
