Choose the account registration before comparing trading screens
An RRSP, FHSA, RESP and non-registered account cannot be treated as interchangeable containers. Start by matching the account you already have or intend to open. Questrade’s Canadian account catalogue includes TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, RESP and several other registrations. Webull Canada’s current account help lists cash, margin, TFSA and RRSP accounts. Check the specific registration and any restrictions before planning a move.
This comparison concerns placing your own securities trades. Questwealth Portfolios is a separate managed service. Webull US retirement or advisory accounts are also outside the Canadian comparison. Keeping the scope exact prevents a familiar brand name from hiding an account mismatch.
Published pricing: the lines worth comparing
Figures were checked on against Questrade transaction fees, Questrade administration fees, Webull Canada pricing and the Webull Canada fee breakdown. The detailed schedules matter when a headline says only “$0 commission.”
| Cost or function | Questrade | Webull Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible online Canadian/US stock and ETF commissions | $0 | $0 |
| Direct CAD/USD conversion | Published 1.5% conversion fee | Published exchange rate plus 1.5% markup |
| CAD and USD balances | Dual-currency balances; review registered-account settlement settings | CAD and USD sides included |
| Journaling an eligible security | Normally $9.95/request; separate Plus waiver | Do not assume the Questrade journaling route is available; obtain Canadian confirmation |
| Partial account transfer out | $150 listed fee | $50 plus tax |
| Full account transfer out | $150 listed fee | $150 plus tax |
| Account maintenance | No listed inactivity fee | Detailed schedule lists $0.70/month per account administration/maintenance |
Applicable tax and transaction-specific charges can add to these figures. Similar headline FX percentages do not prove identical live rates or identical final USD proceeds.
Separate a currency balance from buying power
Questrade’s balance guide distinguishes actual CAD and USD cash from combined equivalents and buying power. A display in “combined USD” is not a bank of US dollars you already own. Registered-account settlement preferences and currency deficits can also alter the outcome, so look at the separate balances.
Webull Canada says the currency sides are built in. Its fee schedule also warns that clients manage the currency cash and that a purchase deficit will not be automatically flattened by a conversion. In either interface, locate settled cash in the trade’s currency before relying on the account total. An order that draws on a currency deficit introduces a different cost question from a cash-funded order.
A useful personal checklist records three values: USD cash before the order, expected USD settlement amount and USD cash after the order. Do the same for CAD if that is the trade currency. This catches a funding error without assuming one broker will repair it automatically.
A fictional $2,000 conversion and two account exits
Suppose Taylor converts $2,000 CAD using a hypothetical 1.5% fee component. The simple planning estimate is $30. If the remaining USD is reused for later US-stock purchases, there is no reason to count another CAD-to-USD conversion just because Taylor places a second USD-funded trade. A later conversion back to CAD is a separate event.
Now assume Taylor has two accounts and may move both in full later. At a hypothetical $150 outgoing charge for each account, that is $300 before tax, not $150 for the customer relationship. If one account moves only partially, the current fee schedules can produce a different total at the two brokers. Confirm the relevant charge and any reimbursement conditions before placing a transfer request.
The lesson is not that Taylor should choose either provider. It is that a cost comparison needs the number of accounts, the type of transfer and the currency path. A broker with equal stock commissions can still create a different bill for a particular workflow. The cost tools can help separate those inputs.
What changes if you want Norbert’s Gambit?
Questrade’s journaling instructions describe an online request, normally $9.95, with a waiver under Questrade Plus. The same instructions describe settlement and request delays; RESP online journaling has a support-assisted exception. The subscription’s own cost and conditions need their own line in the budget. “Free with a plan” is not proof that subscribing solely for one request is cheaper.
For a purely hypothetical $2,000 conversion, comparing a $30 percentage estimate with a $9.95 request fee leaves $20.05 before tax, trading spread, market movement and any subscription cost. That difference is not a guaranteed saving. The security purchase and sale happen through markets, and the resulting exchange outcome may change while the request is processing.
The Canadian Webull sources reviewed here do not establish an equivalent supported journaling workflow. That is an evidence limit, not proof of a permanent ban. Ask Webull Canada about the exact security, account and currency route before buying an ETF solely to attempt it. Do not substitute a Reddit external-bank chain for verified deposit instructions. See the currency-conversion comparison for a broader cost framework.
Check useful tools rather than counting features
List the tasks you will perform regularly: reading a quote, finding the right listing, entering a limit order, managing an open order, exporting a statement and reviewing a cash balance. Add a special trading session, order type or data feed only if you need it. Then check the Canadian platform documentation for your account and the device you use.
Promotional market-data access or a temporary options-fee refund should not be counted as a permanent account feature. If a quote feed has a trial or activity condition, budget what happens after it ends. This article does not claim measured execution quality, app reliability or support response times from a test that was not performed.
Make the receiving broker confirm the transfer plan
Before submitting, list account registrations, whole and fractional positions, cash by currency, open orders and any restrictions. Ask whether every position is accepted in kind, whether unsupported holdings stay behind or must be sold, and how the outgoing charge will be collected. Confirm whether any incoming transfer-fee reimbursement needs a statement, minimum value or application within a deadline.
For a TFSA, the CRA guidance distinguishes a receiving-institution direct transfer from taking money out and contributing it yourself. Avoid creating a contribution-room problem while trying to reduce brokerage costs. Account registration, currency settlement and tax consequences are separate checks; an app’s “transfer” button does not answer all three.

What to do next
Compare Questrade and Webull Canada through the account and currency workflow you need. Ordinary stock commissions are only one line. Currency settlement, a documented journaling route, per-account recurring charges and partial/full transfer costs can change the result without producing a universal winner.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Are Questrade and Webull Canada both commission-free?
Both currently publish $0 commissions for eligible online Canadian- and US-listed stock and ETF trades. FX, spreads, administration and applicable transaction-specific charges should be checked separately.
Does Questrade still charge 1.99% to convert CAD and USD?
The transaction schedule checked on October 18, 2026 lists 1.5%. An older Reddit post or comparison may reflect earlier pricing. Use the current schedule and the transaction confirmation for your actual conversion.
Can I perform Norbert’s Gambit at Webull Canada?
The Canadian sources reviewed for this comparison do not establish a supported journaling workflow. Ask Webull Canada about your exact account and security first. Questrade’s documented process should not be assumed to work at another broker.
Is a partial transfer always cheaper than a full transfer?
No. Questrade lists $150 for either a partial or full outgoing account transfer. Webull’s detailed schedule lists $50 plus tax for a partial outgoing transfer and $150 plus tax for a full one. Confirm the current account-specific charge and any reimbursement conditions.
Can my total buying power hide a USD debit?
It can show a combined-currency equivalent rather than settled USD cash. Check CAD and USD cash separately and confirm how your account settles a trade or handles a deficit. Currency borrowing and interest are separate from the commission.
